Real-Time Dosimetry Solution

In work environments where there is a higher risk of radiation exposure, or for personnel who need to be more aware of potential exposure, such as pregnant women, using a real-time dosemeter may be advisable or required by national legislation. These electronic dosemeters, also known as active personal dosemeters (APDs), track and measure an individual’s radiation dose over time. At Dosilab, we offer a range of dedicated APD systems. These systems automatically store and track the dose measurements during a work shift, allowing for the monitoring of total exposure over time.

The performance requirements for APDs are generally the same for both large and small organizations. However, depending on the specific needs and environment of the user, a flexible network solution has been developed: dosiACTIVE, a network solution centralized on a server. This system ranges from a single, small attribution station (suitable for smaller organisations) to several extendable stations, strategically placed throughout a larger organisation.

The dosiACTIVE system is complete, standalone product system. It consist of easy-to-use dosemeters, which are loaded with the profile of the individual wearer upon attribution (the process of assigning a dosemeter). The active dosemeters allow for precise measurement in medical and industrial settings where workers may be exposed to radiation.

The attribution stations, which are available as wall-mounted or tabletop stations, serve as storage for the dosemeters, allow for the reading of the wearer’s dose and to recharge the dosemeter batteries. The accompanying management software is regularly updated to meet the changing needs of radiation protection officers and wearers. Finally, our hotline is available for any questions or maintenance needs.

Patient dosimetry

Real-time monitoring of patient radiation exposure during diagnostic or therapeutic medical procedures is a crucial safety precaution, particularly in high dose or dose rate applications. Dosilab is currently developing a range of products for performing quality assurance and quality control procedures in high dose rate brachytherapy, and a first system is currently in clinical trials.

Securidose-BT
High dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy uses a small, highly active radioactive source that generates strong dose gradients in its environment. Precise control of the radiation source’s spatial and temporal position is essential for successful treatment, so it is necessary to implement a quality assurance and quality control procedure.

To meet this need, Dosilab is developing a new generation of products based on patented technology from the Institute of Nanotechnologies Lyon (INL) at the University Claude Bernard in Lyon, developed in cooperation with the Hospices Civils de Lyon and the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Grenoble Alpes. This innovative technology uses miniaturized dosemeters made of gallium nitride (GaN) transducers that emit UV photons when exposed to ionizing radiation (radioluminescence).

Description
Securidose-BT is an instrumented phantom that can be used to perform quality assurance procedures for HDR brachytherapy, in accordance with ESTRO recommendations (Booklet No. 8).

Securidose-BT measures the following parameters:

  • The position of the source and the length of the transfer tubing.
  • The pause time of the source
  • The activity of the source
  • The dose at specific points using the TG43 formalism.
  • Compares the measured results with the expected results using the DICOM file of the treatment protocol.
  • Stores the measurements made in a database. Thanks to this data set, potential deviations of the system can be detected. The respective reports can be downloaded as PDFs and consequently guarantee the traceability of the quality monitoring of a unit.

Measurements are made:

  • In real-time
  • Automatically
  • With quick set-up: Securidose-BT connection is fitted to the transfer tubes of the source afterloader and communication with system is remotely controlled via network

dosiCHECK – optimized monitoring service cycle

Dosilab has optimized the dosemeter wear cycle and the delivery of dose reports to reduce the administrative burden on our clients while maintaining high quality and fast, responsive service.

The recurring dosemeter issuance, return, and analysis cycle requires minimal effort from the client: they simply need to exchange worn dosemeters for new ones and return the worn ones to us for processing. The same shipping box used to receive new dosemeters can be used to return worn ones. Changes to dosemeter issuance due to personnel changes can be submitted online through our dosiWEB platform or via forms.

Optimizing our monitoring service provides the following benefits:

  • Optimized timing of shipping allows for last minute wearer modifications to be taken into account
  • A prepaid return label is enclosed with every blueBOX shipment for easy return of worn dosemeters
  • Access to advanced evaluation statistics and reporting via dosiWEB
  • In the event of an increased dose measurement, we immediately inform the client and, where applicable, the relevant authorities
  • Reminders are issued for non-returned dosemeters to enforce consistent dose assessment and facilitate traceability before dosemeters are considered lost
  • Emergency measurements: we offer an express dosemeter pick-up service and immediate processing in the event of a suspected high dose exposure.

dosiBADGE: the whole body dosimeter

Medical personnel potentially exposed to ionizing radiation must wear at least one whole body dosemeter whenever they access a radiation controlled area.

The dosemeter for each wear period is personalized and non-transferable. To help avoid mix-ups, Dosilab prints the identification information of the wearer clearly on the assigned dosemeter :

  • First- und Surname
  • Enterprise or department
  • Wear period
  • Wear periods are colour coded to help avoid mix ups of wearing periods

Furthermore, traceability and measurement quality are ensured by continuous testing throughout the entire wear cycle.
Given the complex work environment of medical workers, a single support type for a whole body dosemeter may not be sufficient. With the help of our clients, Dosilab has developed a range of dosemeter wear-systems to address this need.

  • Holder in five different colours: yellow, blue, red, green and transparent to easily differentiate between departments, services or functions within an enterprise.
  • Combined ID-badge and dosemeter holder: One combined holder replaces several individual badges
  • The holder and badge can be worn using a clip or lanyard. While clients often prefer the clip, a lanyard may be a better choice in surgery areas where clothing is frequently changed. The metal-free lanyard is well-suited for X-ray and MRI environments.

dosiRING: the extremity dosimeter

Monitoring radiation exposure to extremities, particularly fingers, is important for interventional radiologists and other medical staff who may expose their fingers to radiation during medical procedures. X-ray imaging and nuclear medicine procedures can result in high doses to extremities, often close to legal limits.

Extremity monitoring, in addition to whole body dosimetry, is recommended by the ICRP and legally required in many countries such as Switzerland. In recent years, surgeons and interventional radiologists have begun routinely wearing our small, non-intrusive extremity dosemeters to assess their finger dose. International studies, such as ORAMED, have shown that ring dosemeters are more effective at assessing extremity dose compared to wrist dosemeters. While we still offer wrist dosemeters, we recommend the use of ring dosemeters.

Our dosemeter ring was designed for maximal comfort:

small and comfortable:

  • Small and adjustable:
o 2 shapes available: classic and spiral
o The flexible arms of the ring are adjustable to any finger size
  • Waterproof:
o Ultrasound welding technology ensures 100% waterproof sealing of the element. This allows the ring to be decontaminated biologically or cold sterilized by immersion in liquid decontaminants.
  • Label identification
o The wearer’s name and wear period are printed on the inside of the ring for easy identification, following the same logic as whole body dosemeter identification
o Identical colour coding method for wearing periods as for whole body dosemeter
  • Thin cap to minimize beta filtration
o the cap has a minimal thickness enabling accurate beta measurements while still being sufficiently robust to resist harsh environments.

dosiWEB: the WEB service platform

Managing your dosimetry needs can be time-consuming. dosiWEB allows online access to all relevant dosimetry data for your organization at any time, reducing administrative workload.

With dosiWEB, you have full flexibility on when you register changes. For Swiss clients, changes entered by the 15th of the month before the new wear period will be taken into account for the next wear period.

dosiWEB functions :

  • View the list of monitored persons by department
  • View and/or download dose records by person or department. Dose records are accessible on-line within 3-5 days from receipt of returned dosemeters
  • Add new persons and their dosemeter requirements
  • Cancel dosemeter issuance for a wearer or interrupt issuance for a certain time period (maternity leave, sabbatical,…)
  • Transfer person from one department to another with a simple click
  • View status of returned dosemeters. The list of non-returned dosemeters can be downloaded
  • Manage and view dose measurements of your transport and ambiance dosemeters (same as for persons)

There is no need to install dedicated software on your computer – dosiWEB only requires internet access.

dosiWEB uses secure access via the standard internet https protocol. Each client receives individualized access codes for designated personnel, typically radioprotection officers or health physicists.

dosiBOARD: safekeeping the dosimeters during the wear cycle

Centralizing dosemeters when not in use during a wear period has shown to be a good practice to minimize losses and streamline the exchange process at the end of a wear period. It is also a good radioprotection practice, as it ensures all dosemeters in an organization are exposed to the same background radiation, avoiding possible small dose inconsistencies among wearers. In certain countries, keeping dosemeters together is also a legal requirement.

TLD Technology and Dose reassessing capabilities

Thermoluminescent dosimetry (TLD) is a well-established technique that measures radiation exposure by detecting the light emission (luminescence) that results from the interaction of radiation with a special dosemeter material. The process works by trapping electrons in the crystal’s atoms at higher energy states due to impurities introduced into the crystal. When the crystal is heated, the trapped electrons return to their ground state and release photons with an energy equal to the difference between the trap state and the ground state. The emitted light is proportional to the radiation exposure, allowing for accurate measurement of the dose. The technique is called TLD because it involves both excitation by thermal heating and measurement of the luminescence signal.

The TLD dosemeters we use contain two calcium sulphate and two lithium borate elements. To read the dose, the dosemeter is heated to 370°C using several flashes of infrared light. This causes the dosemeter to emit ultraviolet light, the intensity of which is measured by light-sensitive detectors. The emitted light is proportional to the gamma, X-ray, or beta radiation the wearer was exposed to during the wearing period.

The measurement is done using a TLD reader, which counts the photons emitted during the heating cycle and stores the measurement data. This data is then processed using an algorithm that determines the dose of the exposure based on the readings of each TLD element. The raw measured data (the glow curves) is stored in the database for further analysis if needed.

After the measurement is complete, the dosemeter can be reused because the trapped electrons have returned to the ground state and are ready to interact with radiation again.

APD – Active Personal Dosimeter

The active dosemeter, an electronic dosemeter, measures and displays doses and dose rates in real-time. The monitored person therefore has an overview of their radiation exposure at all times and can optimize their radiation exposure accordingly.

Unlike passive dosemeters, active dosemeters are not assigned to a specific person, but can be worn by any individual recorded in the database. When a dosemeter is taken from the registration station, it is assigned to a person by entering a personal code. The name of the wearer appears on the display. Once the dosemeter is returned, it is released for the next person.

Key features of our active dosemeters:

  • Continuous display, no need for button or key operation. The following data is displayed on the display:
o Name and first name of the wearer
o Measurement and display of the dose in terms of Hp(10) and Hp(0.07) and the dose rate.
o Display of the maximum dose rate (the highest measured dose rate in a wearing period)
o Display/alarm when the limit of dose/dose rate is exceeded. The alarm profile can be customized for each person recorded in the database:
     Alarm regarding dose
     Alarm regarding dose rate
  • Alarm in the form of sound and light (flashing LED)
  • Automatic transmission of measurement data and warning signals to the database
  • The measurement ranges span from 1μSv to 100Sv or 20μSv/h to 10Sv/h
  • Response to γ from 20 keV to 6 MeV
  • User profiles with programmable thresholds for triggering warning signals when exceeding a certain dose or dose rate
  • Rechargeable battery
  • Robust construction, withstanding accidental falls

dosiACTVE System Architecture

The dosiACTIVE dose monitoring system is designed for easy integration into a customer’s existing network (LAN). All system modules (dosiSERVER, dosiSTATION and dosiCLIENT) communicate via the TCP/IP protocol.
Functionalities:

  • dosiCLIENT: is used for administration of monitored persons, analysis of dose data and data export. As a rule, dosiCLIENT is installed on the PC of the radiation protection officer(s) of a facility.
  • dosiSTATION: an autonomous log-on and log-off station for dosemeters
  • dosiSERVER manages the database (of all carriers and their information) and the communication with the stations.

microSTA

The microSTA, miniSTA and miniSTA with extensions may be used as follows:

  • – Assignment/registration of a dosemeter to a carrier
  • – Sign-out after use and transfer of data to the database
  • – Viewing of a carrier’s own dose values
  • – Touch screen for operation of the station
  • – Slots for 4 or 8 dosemeters
  • – Operating system runs on Linux
  • – Network connection via RJ-45 or WiFi

The system accesses the local database on the attribution station for each operation and regularly synchronizes it with the server. This ensures that the attribution stations can function even if the network connection is disrupted. When the network connection is restored, the database is automatically resynchronized with the server.

Extension

If more dosemeter slots are needed, an extension can be added to the attribution station to provide up to 8 additional dosemeter slots with the same functionality as the main station.

dosiACTIVE Softwares: dosiCLIENT & dosiSERVER

Dosilab uses two software modules for the administration of monitored persons and measurement data, as well as for secure communication with the server:

  • dosiCLIENT is used to manage the persons to be monitored, their personal data, and to retrieve and analyse measured dose values
  • dosiSERVER controls the system periphery via standard TCP/IP LAN for configuration and control of APD usage

Access to confidential measurement data in dosiCLIENT is protected by a security protocol. Using dosiCLIENT, the radiation protection officer of an enterprise can manage and assess measured values, as well as perform other tasks assigned to them such as:

  • Define the structure of an enterprise and its departments
  • Create a carrier and assign it to an operational unit
  • Set thresholds for alarm signals according to the work profile.
  • Analyse dose values using graphical or tabular reports for any measurement period (from minutes to years).
  • Review registered alarms during a wear period
  • Monitor the use of dosemeters
  • Generate annual statistics
  • Export all measurement data collected in dosiCLIENT to .xls and .csv format.

Dosilab ensures compatibility between the different generations of active dosemeters and attribution stations, to ensure continuous access to dosimetry data.

The Active Dosemeter with Bluetooth Functionality

Dosilab is the only company offering an active dosemeter with Bluetooth transmission. Using the Bluetooth function, measurement data is transmitted in real time to a remote recipient and can be visualized using the dosiLIVE software installed on a tablet or PC. The dosiLIVE application is user-friendly and allows for the creation of a separate alarm profile without changing the individual active dosemeter’s profile.

Visualisation using colour codes indicates whether a wearer is in an environment with acceptable, moderate or high radiation exposure.

dosiLIVE can also be used for educational purposes in the operating theatre. By providing an easy-to-read visual representation of the radiation source, it allows wearers to optimize their positioning and learn for future procedures.

Range: Additional modules allow for a switch from a shorter to a longer distance with a single click, without requiring manipulation of the dosemeter.

At short range, a wearer can follow their own measurement data on a screen mounted in the operating theatre, as the actual dosemeter is located under protective clothing and cannot be directly accessed.

At a longer distance, a third person can directly follow the measurement data of one or more monitored individuals.

The Bluetooth dosemeter can also be used in standard mode, i.e. without Bluetooth function (via dosemeter button).

dosiEYE: Eye lens dosimetry

In 2018, the FOPH (Federal Office of Public Health, BAG) decided to lower the annual eye lens dose limit to 20mSv, following EURATOM and ICRP guidelines.

Dosilab developed the dosiEYE single element dosemeter to help our clients comply with the new regulations and ensure the safety of medical staff. The dosiEYE dosemeter can be easily attached to existing safety glasses using an adapter with a bayonet catch (and corresponding key). In addition, we worked with Mavig GmbH to develop specialized safety glasses with an integrated dosemeter holder, called dosiGLASSES.

The dosiEYE can be worn as a clip (called dosiCLIP) and is suitable for not only eye lens dosimetry, but also for wear under or above a lead apron or workplace studies.

dosiEYE functions :

  • Cold sterilization possible: The dosemeter is sealed via ultrasound and is therefore 100% waterproof, allowing for cold sterilisation by immersion in disinfectant
  • Visual identification: The identification label is sealed in with the dosemeter for easy identification of the wearer and wear period. The whole body dosemeter and dosiEYE wearing period colour code are identical
  • The element measurement of 3mm allows for effective Hp(3) measurements.

dosiEYE wear options :

  • As dosiCLIP for workplace and over/under lead apron studies
  • As adapter, attached to existing personal safety glasses. The dosemeter element can be easily detached from the adapter by help of the yellow key at the end of a wear period
  • As dosiGLASSES, personalized safety glasses:
o Lead lenses and side shields with 0.5mm lead equivalent
o Lenses with single correction available
o Mount for dosiEYE may be attached on either side of the glasses
o Adjustable lenses for optimal fit
o Wide side shields for mayimum protection
o The glasses can be purchased through : https://mavig.de/strahlenschutz/augenschutz/br330/

We use Google Analytics with the functions of Universal Analytics on our website. This allows us to analyse the activities of our website across devices (e.g. when accessed via laptop and later via smartphone). This is made possible by a pseudonymous assignment of a user ID to a user. This happens, for example, when you register for a customer account or log in for your customer account. No personal data will be forwarded to Google. The additional functions of Universal Analytics do not restrict the aforementioned data protection measures such as anonymizing the IP address or the possibility of objecting to the use of Google Analytics.

The data collected within the framework of Google Analytics is stored for as long as is necessary for the analysis of the website. The data is automatically deleted after a period of 50 months at the latest.
